Boosting Food Security for Students
Help Students Access Resources
—From the desk of Marissa Carrasco, Director, Student Engagement and Wellness
As we approach exam time, we know some students may face food security challenges. There are resources both at the college and in our local communities that can help support students—now and all year-round. Please encourage students to check out these resources, including the Selkirk College Students’ Union Food Pantry and food banks in the West Kootenay and Boundary regions.
This year, the college is partnering with students in the Steps to Opportunities, Academics & Readiness (SOAR) Program at the Silver King Campus to expand the free food hamper initiative they have been holding for the past few years. Each free hamper contains food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks.
If you know a student who could benefit from a hamper, please encourage them to fill out this form. Please note that students must complete this form themselves. Students must submit forms by April 13, and hampers will be distributed between April 16 and 20. There will be pick-up locations in Castlegar, Nelson, and Trail.
There is a limited number of hampers available. Please help us get them to the students who need them.
This initiative is funded by popcorn sales held by the SOAR students at the Silver King Campus and supplemented by the funds raised for food security at the Selkirk College Giving Day.
