Radon Monitoring Program Update

Test Results, Program Expansion and More

Last fall, we let you know about radon monitoring across our facilities during the winter months. We are pleased to share the results and progress of our ongoing radon mitigation efforts.

Test Results Summary

We have received all test results from across our campuses, and we are happy to report that radon levels have decreased across almost all tested areas compared to previous year-over-year measurements. The majority of areas tested are below the recommended levels of 200 Bq/m³. A handful of results from the Castlegar Campus are between 200 and 600 Bq/m³, and we are actively reducing these levels through adjustments to our HVAC system while working on a longer-term mitigation solution. This positive trend reflects the effectiveness of our proactive approach to radon management.

Program Expansion

As part of our 2024/25 radon program, we expanded testing to include additional areas in Castlegar to better understand locations where further mitigation efforts may be needed. This comprehensive approach lets us maintain a complete picture of radon levels across our facilities.

Mitigation Strategies and Partnerships

We continue working closely with the radon mitigation specialist we engaged last year and the Interior Health Authority (IHA). Through this collaboration, we have confirmed that HVAC system adjustments can reduce radon to very low levels, providing an appropriate and effective mitigation method while we develop our long-term mitigation strategy.

Before this past winter's testing, we implemented ventilation adjustments in several locations. We are pleased to report that areas with previously high levels have shown significant improvements following these changes.

Our Commitment

We take radon exposure seriously and are actively addressing all elevated levels, regardless of occupancy. Our close collaboration with the Interior Health Authority's specialist environmental health officer ensures we receive expert guidance for testing, monitoring and mitigation planning.

We will continue to monitor radon levels closely and implement mitigation steps following recommended strategies to maintain a safe environment for all employees across our facilities.

If you have any specific questions or concerns about our radon monitoring program, please reach out to Donna Drover or Health & Safety.
