Selkirk College Closing Learning Centres in Kaslo and Nakusp

The College Is Exploring Other Ways to Deliver Education and Training in These Communities

Dear Colleagues,

Last Thursday, the Selkirk College Board of Governors met for a special meeting to approve the executive leadership’s recommendation that we close the Kaslo and Nakusp learning centres, effective June 30, 2025, and December 31, 2025, respectively.

As you know, in early 2024, the federal government made policy changes around international student recruitment that have significantly impacted rural colleges and communities in particular. These changes were made without consultation and implemented quickly, with the result that we must address a $9 million budget deficit in 2025/26. Unfortunately, the high costs associated with operating the learning centres isn’t sustainable.

This decision has been one of the most challenging choices we’ve faced as an institution. We deeply value the role these centres have played in delivering accessible education and fostering community connections. Our financial realities have left us with no choice but to make these difficult adjustments.

I want to express my sincere thanks to the dedicated employees who have worked at and with these centres, creating a welcoming environment for learners and supporting their goals. This decision in no way diminishes the profound impact you’ve had on students and the community at large.

Union leadership, deans and directors will work with affected employees to determine the next steps. We’ll also be consulting with each community to explore alternative access models going forward.

While this marks the end of a chapter, it also opens the door for renewal. I know that together, we can navigate this transition and build a sustainable future for Selkirk College for generations to come.

Take good care,

Maggie
