About Facilities Services

Selkirk College operates and maintains eight campuses and learning centres in six different communities throughout the West Kootenay and Boundary regions. The ongoing planning and execution of projects is vital to meeting the needs of students and employees.

Facilities Services also repairs college buildings, grounds, utilities, systems and equipment, as requested by the campus community.

Maintenance

Maintenance for permanent parts of Selkirk College campuses is free unless it requires overtime or involves non-permanent parts—such as office furniture or equipment, which may incur charges. All requests must be submitted via the work order request form.

Work Order Request Form

Urgent maintenance requests, including utility malfunctions or equipment failures posing imminent danger to life, health, security or the environment, should be reported immediately via phone. Examples include power outages, flooding or gas leaks requiring immediate response to prevent escalation.

Routine Capital Projects

A routine capital project is any renovation, new construction or equipment purchase that creates a capital asset with an expected life span of two or more years and has a total expected cost of at least $1,000 (e.g., furniture, classroom renovation, student support spaces, office relocations/expansions, etc.). Employees can propose routine capital projects for evaluation in December/January each year (see Procedures and Guidelines).  See examples of recent capital projects.

Project Prioritization Criteria

The Facilities Capital Planning Committee and senior leadership use the following criteria to determine the approval and prioritization of capital requests:

  • Alignment with the Strategic Plan, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Plan, Sustainability Plan, Indigenization Plan and Campus Master Plan
  • Impact on the student experience
  • Alignment with facility management and budget priority
  •  Alignment with campus standardization
  • Compliance with health and safety

Submit a Request

Unfortunately, due to the high dollar value and critical nature of current projects, no new requests for routine capital projects will be approved for the 2025 fiscal year.

Supervisors are still welcome to submit project requests, which will be recorded for possible completion in the 2026 fiscal year.

Procedures and Guidelines

Supervisors are typically invited by email in December to submit a routine capital project request. Requestors will be notified if their project is approved to proceed in March. Requests received outside of this application cycle will be tracked for inclusion in the following year's evaluation.

To submit a routine capital request:

  1. Complete one Routine Capital Project Request Form per request. Submit the completed form to supervisor, dean or chair for approval and signature(s).
  2. The supervisor, dean or chair submits the request to the Facilities Capital Planning Committee for review.
  3. Facilities or IT Services will provide a cost estimate for the proposed project.
  4. The Capital Planning Committee reviews and/or prioritizes routine capital requests and creates an approved list of projects to be completed.
  5. The manager, facilities capital projects, advises if the capital request was approved or deferred.

Questions and feedback are always welcomed. Please direct any inquiries to Facilities.
