Building Your Team
Building your team, including hiring well and for the right positions, is one of the most important roles of a supervisor.
Having the right people, doing the right work, is essential for the success of the college. Recruitment of new employees and promotion of existing employees into new positions, requires a significant investment of time and effort.
Every recruitment process must be conducted in a careful and informed manner. This information is intended for hiring managers and is also relevant to anyone sitting on a Hiring/Selection Committee.
Posting Positions
Before posting a position, make sure you have defined the requirements of the position to be filled, either updating an existing job description or creating a new one. Contact careers@selkirk.ca if you need help creating a job description.
Once you are ready to post:
Log-in to your Unit4 Recruit (U4R) account and use our step-by-step guides (Unit4 Recruit Guides). In your posting description, make sure to specify which dates you want your posting ‘Live’ and when you want it taken down.
Please note at this time, all postings require approval from the Vice President of your department and the Executive Director of Human Resources. Please allow up to one week for the approval process. For more urgent posting needs, please email careers@selkirk.ca.
Once approved, the posting will be live on the career site at http://careers.selkirk.ca and ready to receive applications. Additionally, HR will email the new posting(s) to our Postings Email Group. However, for the time being, we will not be physically posting on our internal bulletin boards.
Internal/External postings will be on MySelkirk, Selkirk.ca, WorkBC, and the bulletin boards. Additional advertising may be considered.
Conducting Interviews and Selecting Candidate(s)
For detailed instructions on scheduling interviews, please see: Unit4 Recruit Guides.
For remote interviews, HR will create the links & interview packages. All the interview information will be added into a calendar invitation, per candidate, then sent to the Hiring Manager and Hiring Committee members prior to interviews.
Hiring Managers must determine interview questions in advance of interviews, and the same set of questions must be used for each candidate for a given position. For assistance in writing interview questions, please email careers@selkirk.ca.
During the interview, each Hiring Committee member must complete their set of candidate interview questions by taking notes on each candidates’ responses. This can be done either on a laptop/tablet, or on printed copies with handwritten notes. Those who take handwritten notes must scan and email their notes to careers@selkirk.ca following the interview.
After selecting the preferred candidate, the Hiring Manager must conduct a minimum of two reference checks.
Extending Offers and Giving Regrets
- Reference Check Form
- BCGEU Scale Placement Form | SCFA Initial Salary Scale Placement Form (if applicable)
Please note that employment contracts require two signatures: one from the hiring manager, and one from the hiring manager’s supervisor. Digital signatures can be created and entered into the fillable PDFs; email signatures will also be accepted. (See GoSelkirk for instructions on creating digital signatures.)
Once receiving the required paperwork, the HR team will write an offer letter, and the Executive Director of Human Resources will extend the offer to the successful candidate via telephone. After the verbal offer, the HR team will email the candidate their offer letter (cc’ing the Hiring Manager), and await acceptance.
Depending on the circumstance, either HR or the Hiring manager will send regrets to unsuccessful candidates.
